Professor Chunli Bai is currently the Executive Senior Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Peking University in 1978 and received his MS and Ph.D. degrees from CAS’s Institute of Chemistry in 1981 and 1985, respectively. During 1985-1987, he worked at Caltech, USA conducting research in the field of physical chemistry. His research expertises include the structure and properties of polymer catalysts, X-ray crystallography of organic compounds, molecular mechanics and EXAFS research on electro-conducting polymers. Since mid-1980s, he has been working in the fields of scanning tunneling microscopy and molecular nanotechnology. Prof. Bai has won numerous prestigious awards including many top national and ministerial prizes for his scientific achievements. He is also winner of the International Medal by the Society of Chemical Industry, UK; TWAS 2002 Medal in Chemical Sciences, and the HLHL Chemistry Prize. His latest honor is the election to the US National Academy of Sciences as a foreign member. He has co-authored some 250 international refereed journal papers and more than 10 research monographs and books.
