Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, Michael Graetzel directs there the Institute of Photonics and Interfaces. His research area is related to light induced electron transfer reactions in micro-heterogeneous systems and artificial photosynthesis. He discovered a new type of solar cell based on dye sensitized nanocrystalline oxide films. Prof. Graetzel, who is the author of over 500 publications, two books and over 20 patents has been a visiting professor at several foreign universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Tokyo and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Cachan in Paris. He has received numerous awards and honorary lectureships, including the Millenium 2000 European Price of Innovation, the 2001 Faraday medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Dutch Havinga award. He ranks amongst the top 20 most highly cited chemists in the world. In 1996 the University of Uppsala, Sweden conferred to him a honorary doctor's degree in recognition of his research achievements. He serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals. He is a honorary member of the Société Vaudoise des Sciences Naturelles and a member of the Swiss Chemical Society.
